Checklist
Your first 72 hours after a home disaster
A simple, day-by-day list for the first three days after a fire, flood, or other disaster at home.
Print this page or keep it open on your phone. Check off each step as you go. Not everything will apply to you, and that’s okay.
Day 1
Safety, shelter, and the first calls
- Everyone is safe and has seen a doctor if needed
- Family and close friends know where you are
- Safe place to sleep tonight: DVS (480) 349-7300, Red Cross, 2-1-1, or family
- Medications, glasses, phone charger, and ID gathered (or a plan to replace them)
- Fire, police, or incident report number written down
- Insurance company called and claim number written down
- Pets safe and fed
Day 2
Protect your home and your claim
- Asked your insurer about coverage for temporary housing and meals
- Photos and video of all damage, inside and out
- Property secured (boarded, tarped, or locked) with your insurer’s okay
- Utilities checked by the utility company before turning anything back on
- Spoiled or smoke-exposed food and medicine thrown out
- Folder or envelope started for every receipt
- Claim log started: date, who you spoke with, what they said
Day 3
Notify, replace, and plan
- Mortgage company or landlord notified
- Employer and kids’ schools notified
- Mail held or forwarded at the post office
- Bank and credit card companies called if cards were lost
- Replacement IDs started (driver license first)
- Written estimates requested from licensed restoration companies
- State and local resources checked
- One thing done today just for you: a meal, a walk, a call with a friend
